Resto projects command high prices at ACA

More than £1.4million-worth of classic metal was bought at Anglia Car Auctions’ Easter sale, with the biggest surprise being the high demand for barn finds, which resulted in three of the highest prices achieved.

Top of the pile was – rather unsurprisingly given its condition – a pristine 1973 Jaguar E-type V12, which sold for £57,750. It was followed by a 1985 Porsche 930 Turbo of similar quality at £55,125. However, it was the project cars that caused the biggest stir in the room.

Continuing the Jaguar theme, a 1965 E-type 4.2 barn find fetched £39,370, while two more big cats – a 1951 XK120 roadster and a 1958 XK150 Coupé – sold for £33,600 and £26,512, respectively.

All three cars were described as needing full restoration.

A rare 1966 Sunbeam Tiger project also drew a great deal of attention, with frenzied bidding quickly pushing beyond its estimate to achieve £24,150.

A 1964 Triumph TR4 in a similar condition also sold well after a late rally and flurry of activity from phone bidders. It went for £18,375.

One of the biggest surprises of the day was a 1973 Datsun 240Z, which doubled its estimate to fetch £8400. It doesn’t seem so long ago that a comparable sum would have secured an original, running example.

Two Alfa Romeos from the same collection were in high demand: a 1961 Giulietta Spider 1300 sold for £27,562, while a stunning 1972 Montreal got away for £39,900.

Another highlight was a 1958 Jowett Jupiter, which was treated to a round of applause when the hammer came down at £25,200.
