'Worthless' motoring print smashes £60k estimate

| 17 Apr 2013

A rare artwork by linocut guru Cyril Edward Power made a massive £73,250 at Bonhams in London yesterday (16 April).

Speed Trial captures the moment Sir Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird set a new Land Speed Record of 246mph at Daytona Beach, Florida in 1931.

According to the Bonhams description, the work ‘evokes the sensation of progressive speed achieved through an extensive use of abstract curves and dizzily repeated rhythmic patterns’.

The piece was originally thought to be worth just £20 when it was discovered, by chance, hanging on a garage wall.
