Daytona Cobras to gather at Goodwood

| 27 May 2015

The 50th anniversary of the Shelby Daytona Coupe will be marked in fine style at the Goodwood Revival, as all six of the famous endurance racers are expected to make the journey to the Chichester circuit from 11-13 September.

Just half a dozen examples were ever built, with the model’s racing debut taking place at the 1964 Daytona Continental 2000km – hence the moniker. Dave MacDonald and Bob Holbert secured pole position in chassis ‘CSX2287’ – the only example to be fully built in the United States – during that race, while also clocking a speed of 171.381mph. However, they conceded the lead after a failing differential brought the car into the pits at the 796-mile mark, before spilt fuel caused a fire that retired the Coupe.

All six Daytona Coupes are expected to take part in special demonstration runs taking place on each day of the Revival, while two of the number will compete in the headline race – the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration – on the last day of racing.

The cars will be housed in an area of the paddock that will be mocked up to resemble the pit lane of the 1965 Sebring 12 Hours.
