Europe’s first dragster to hit London

| 29 Aug 2012

Sydney Allard’s pioneering dragster will be one of the stars at Sunday’s Chelsea AutoLegends in the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.

The 1961 Allard Chrysler took 23 weeks to construct at the firm’s Clapham garage. After ironing out teething problems, which included a broken gearbox and a ruptured fuel pipe, the V8-powered machine was capable of 10-second quarter miles, at speeds of around 150mph.

After being displayed at Beaulieu minus its engine, the car has recently treated to a full restoration courtesy of the Allard Chrysler Action Group. This included fitting a supercharged Chrysler 354cu in engine, using the Potvin blower drive similar to that in the original car.
