Incredible Moss collection dazzles at Amelia Island

| 18 Mar 2015

A mind-boggling array of classic racers – each driven by Sir Stirling Moss – stole the show at this year's Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance from 13-15 March.

The incredible set was headlined by Moss' 1955 Mille Miglia, Tourist Trophy and Targa Florio-winning Mercedes-Benz 300SLR.

It was joined by two more Silver Arrows – the W196 Monoposto in which he won his first World Championship British Grand Prix at Aintree, and the streamliner that he drove at Monza in his final Formula One race for the German manufacturer.

Amelia Island Concours

However, it was an American-built classic that took the top prize, with the Best of Show award being given to the ex-Brooks Stevens 1930 Cord L29 Speedster. The renowned designer owned the car until his death in 1995, at which point it was bought by current owners Ed and Judy Schoenthaler, who restored it to its present award-winning condition.

As well as victory at this year's Amelia Island event, the car had success at Pebble Beach in 2000, shortly after its restoration was completed.

Amelia Island Concours

The Cord shared the honours with the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider of David Sydorick, which won the Concours de Sport Best of Show award. The car was transported across the country for the event from its usual home in Beverly Hills, California.

Away from the concours lawn, an incredible $100m changed changed hands during the week's auctions with the top price of more than $6m being paid for a Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet.
