The greatest race car driver you’ve never heard of

| 19 Feb 2016

The Owls Head Transportation Museum in Maine, USA is set to present the second instalment of its 2016 Winter Education Series dedicated to ’The greatest race car driver you’ve never heard of’: John ‘Mac’ McComb. The talk is scheduled for 27 February.

McComb’s racing career is marked by its diversity, having driven for MG, Ford, Triumph, Datsun and Ferrari – as well as numerous private owners – in the SCCA and IMSA series. He picked up a number of SCCA division titles and two National Championships along the way, in addition to coming top in the 1966 Six Hour Trans-American race at the wheel of his Shelby Mustang. Points scored in that event and the following year’s race contributed to two manufacturers’ championships for Ford.

The racer also took to the wheel of some of the era’s most iconic team cars, including Datsun’s BRE-liveried 240Z and 2000 roadsters, and later the Group 44 Triumph TR6s.

McComb, who is a volunteer at the museum, will share tales of his racing career and racing luminaries such as Carroll Shelby and Paul Newman.
