Chapman's 'perfect' Cortina yours for £250k

| 24 Apr 2013

A Lotus Cortina that boasts unbeatable pedigree is on sale for a mammoth £250k in Norfolk.

Frustrated by the time and cost limitations of the hurriedly commissioned ‘standard’ car, Chapman set about preparing his own no-holds-barred version and this is the result.

It comes complete with Elan-sourced independent rear suspension and all-round disc brakes with calipers assisted by a larger-than-standard servo. To these Chapman added Elan half-shafts, a custom-built propshaft, plus green cam covers and seatbelts.

Having been asked to test drive the car, Jim Clark was so impressed that that he refused to give it back and it became the legendary racer’s daily driver.

Now fully restored, the Cortina had formed part of a private collection. Its star-studded logbook includes not just Clark’s name, but also those of Tom Walkinshaw and Andy Middlehurst.
