Joy Across America: the trip so far

| 24 Apr 2013

Joy Rainey completed the first leg of her huge 2826-mile journey from Los Angeles to Daytona Beach, USA, in her 100-plus Oldsmobile on 21 April.

Rainey set off on her epic adventure on 13 April and by day two had climbed 4000 ft to Julian, a former gold-rush town, around 150 miles south east of Los Angeles.

The experienced racer has been avoiding the fast-moving traffic of the freeways and interstate, while facing freezing desert temperatures and sandstorms.

By 20 April, the strong-running Olds had plodded its way past Leandro's – Arizona’s first licensed bar – along the rough roads of the Tonto National forest and the Salt River Canyon en route to New Mexico, stopping off at the Indian Reservation of Zuni.

Now following Route 66 past Grants (towards Albuquerque) the trip is scheduled to finish at Daytona Beach on 13 May.

You can follow Rainey’s progress on her Facbook page, website and YouTube channel.
