Surtees’ Lola marks Can-Am’s inaugural race

| 27 Feb 2013

John Surtees’ Lola T70 will be the star attraction when the Sommet des Légendes historic festival celebrates the Can-Am Championship in Mont-Tremblant from 11-14 July.

The English Formula 1 World Champion guided his T70 to victory at that same track in 1966.

Meanwhile George Follmer, who finished fifth that day driving a John Mecom Lola T70, will be the festival’s grand marshal.

Known as ‘America’s Champion’, Follmer went on to win the series in 1972, driving Penske’s mighty Porsche 917/10, and would eventually triumph at the Canadian circuit in 1978.

As a result, he’s one of only a handful of drivers to have triumphed in both the original and the second-generation championships.

The event will also feature a rare gathering of Bugatti Grand Prix machines and open-wheeled cars from historic Formula Atlantic.
