Derek Gardner (1931-2011)

| 16 Mar 2011

Former Tyrrell F1 Team engineering wizard Derek Gardner passed away on 7 January, aged 79.

With an aeronautics and mechanical background, Gardner was the mastermind behind the team's radical six-wheeled P34/6, driven to victory by Jody Scheckter in 1976's Swedish Grand Prix.

The Tyrrell 001, famously built in Gardner's Warwickshire garage, was put on pole by Jackie Stewart in its first race. Gardner's 003 that followed helped Stewart to his second F1 title and the 006 to his third.
