Safari Rally winner Peter Hughes RIP

Rally driver Peter J C Hughes died in Nairobi on 12 September after a short illness.

Hughes, who was 77, leaves his wife Carole, three sons and a daughter and will be sorely missed by his family and many motor sport friends around the world.

Hughes was the son of the Ford distributor in Kenya and won the East African Safari in 1964 driving a works Mk1 Cortina 1500GT The win heralded the famous Year of the Cortina with Ford clinching the world manufacturer’s prize.

Hughes was also reputed to have driven a Cortina down the Cortina bobsleigh run with the likes of Sir John Whitmore and other contemporaries in a celebration publicity stunt.

He continued to rally for a number of years, but turned his hand to rally administration with the EA Safari as Clerk of the Course and then later his involvement with the successful Safari Classic event.

He was until his death President of the EA Safari Classic Rally.
