Classic & Sports Car – Pedal-powered trio in Members’ Meeting sale

Fast feet will be needed to enjoy three eye-catching lots at Bonhams’ Goodwood Members’ Meeting auction on 7 April.

These Morgan, Alfa Romeo and Auto Union pedal cars are all a cut above the standard kids’ fare.

Admittedly they’re also priced far higher than most – so if you’ve got petrolhead children of your own, you might want to have a reach down the back of the sofa in search of some spare change…

How much are we talking? Well, the Morgan ‘SuperSport Junior’ Three Wheeler child’s pedal car carries a pre-sale estimate of £900-1400. Yes, we agree, that’s quite a sum for a kid’s toy. So what does it get you?

In this case, a limited-edition mini Morgan, built by the factory itself a decade ago. It’s about ⅔ scale and a plaque in the cabin states this is number 055 of what’s thought to be 250 crafted to mark 100 years of the HFS Morgan design.

The 12V battery-powered headlights work, as does the front suspension, and inside is a black-vinyl trimmed seat and a three-spoke steering wheel.

How about something Italian? In the same sale is an Alfa Romeo 8C, a children’s pedal car handmade by Stevenson Bros in 2007.

With its red-painted alloy body and black grille, it certainly looks the part. And, again, there’s a black vinyl seat and an aero-style windscreen, while the bonnet strap is an evocative detail. It is expected to find a new home for £1000-1500 next month.

But the priciest of the trio is the approximately half-scale Silver Arrow, which has an estimate of £2700-4500.

Built by Audi Quattro GmbH in 2008 in the style of an Auto Union Type C, it is the 169th of what’s thought to be 999, and has an aluminium body wrapped round a hand-crafted, spaceframe chassis.

Pedal hard and the chain drive sends power to the rear wheels with seven forward speeds, while hydraulic disc brakes are there to slow you down.

The seat is upholstered in brown leather, plus there’s a removable four-spoke steering wheel and a handbrake.
