Sam Bailey started the SL Shop almost 20 years ago.

It has since moved at least twice, and today it has more than 15,000 customers on its books.

Sam grew up helping his late father work on Mercedes-Benz Pagodas, W108 saloons, and W111 coupés and convertibles, so it’s safe to say that he is fairly steeped in the marque.

He is the go-to man for anything R107 SL-related, from routine servicing to full restoration, at his 30,000sq ft facility just outside Stratford-upon-Avon.

The 107-series is still such a usable everyday classic that upgrades are popular.

“Electronic ignition and throttle bodies on the V8s improve the throttle response, and mean we can change the cam and map the ignition,” explains Sam.

During our visit, at least one customer was throwing money at a full-blown restoration of a 450SLC in the fabrication shop, and even the R129 from the ’90s is beginning to have its day.

“We’re servicing a few 129s,” says Sam, “but it’s hard to get the right customer. R129s can get expensive out of proportion to their worth – they can get a bit crusty underneath because of a lack of underseal above the rear axle.”

Sam has, of late, gone back in time to refocus the efforts of his team on earlier SLs and related models.

He says: “The skillset is all about the Pagoda now, and we have tried to bring all skills in-house.

“We recently bought Tower Bridge Diesels, so we are now the only company in the UK doing pumps for the Bosch mechanical injection – you don’t have to run the risk of posting them to Germany or Poland.

“The pump itself is quite large, like a baby engine. There is a little camshaft in there, but it’s all about the pressures: broken springs inside cause problems, yet the most common issue is when people mess with them who don’t know what they are doing, so they go out of calibration.”

“You also see a lot with seized thermostats: they suffer from lack of use, with no oil circulation, which causes them to seize,” adds Sam.

A test and report on a pump is £320, a rebuild is £2373, and the SL Shop also offers the service to Porsche 911 2.0E and Aston Martin DBS V8 owners.

“We fully strip, aqua-blast and replate them,” says Sam. “They are set to factory spec and bench-tested, then you have to tweak them a bit once they’re back in the car.

“They are dependable as long as they are maintained and used: on early ones the oil was separate from the engine, and it didn’t always get changed. It had its own sump on the 230SL and 250SL: they fill up with fuel and start scoring.”

The SL Shop is rebuilding engines in-house now (if not doing all the machining work), along with both manual and automatic gearboxes.

“We couldn’t find anywhere that would do them,” Sam says. “We rebuild the diffs as well because, again, we struggled to get anyone else to do it.

“They get noisy and the pinion bearings go. We give them new bearings and replate them.”

Converting automatic SLs to manual transmission is another on-site service, alongside more routine offerings such as detailing and pre-season health checks.

SL Shop is now the only UK firm able to service Bosch’s mechanical fuel-injection pumps

The SL Shop now supplies parts for all SLs through to the R230, plus most other 1950s, ’60s and early ’70s saloons and coupés.

Parts supply from Stuttgart can be inconsistent, Sam notes, but there are usually solutions: “We’re lucky to have good contacts for parts in Germany. Anything else we get made.”

Sam reckons one of the biggest problems is getting people to use their cars: “We want to get people into them and have adventures. One guy who bought a Pagoda from us puts 12,000 miles on it a year.

“On the flipside you have the customer who got us to restore his 280SL to beyond perfection, but he can’t bear the thought of it getting wet or scratched, so he keeps it in a glass garage.”
