Ramón Cubiró and his talented team at Velasor have taken slot-car building to a superb new level.

The Barcelona-based group has produced a collection of brilliant miniature 1:32 vintage racing cars that as static pieces match any model for accuracy and detail.

But Velasor’s intricate beauties feature hidden electric motors so they can run on a slot-racing track if a collector is tempted to risk these handmade jewels.

Ramón Cubiró’s interest in slot-cars was sparked at the age of eight

“I didn’t want to build just static models,” says Ramón, who has been fascinated by slot-car racing since the age of eight, when his father presented him with a Scalextric set.

“My dad restored religious relics but also loved slot-cars. I began by helping him fix his Strombecker racers.

“That led to making up spare parts, which is where my business started.

“But from him and my grandfather I got my artistic appreciation.”

Most slot-racing miniatures originate from streamlined subjects, but Ramón has always had a passion for early motorsport history.

“For me it’s the golden age, with the greatest drivers, incredible cars and spectacular tracks,” he says.

“My dream car would be a Bugatti Type 35 or an Alfa Romeo Monza.

“Hellé Nice and Tazio Nuvolari are among my heroes.”

Visiting the remains of the Autódromo de Sitges-Terramar, just 45 mins south from Velasor’s workshop in Barcelona, has a special appeal for Ramón: “It’s easy to imagine the likes of Zborowski and Divo racing there.

“I really enjoy researching each of the models we make.”

A look at the figures and the dioramas that Velasor’s team creates for promotional films quickly confirms the Spanish outfit’s committed grasp of history.

Be it the Targa Florio or the Bugatti team tent in Brescia, famous photos are brought to life around the workshop test track.

For his first Velasor miniature in 2017, Ramón wanted a subject no one had modelled so chose the 1922 Austro-Daimler Sascha.

“It was a revolutionary design by Ferdinand Porsche and launched his reputation,” he says.

The project took 12 months, with the support of a small team of model-makers all working in their spare time.

Together, they produced an inspired miniature.

Just 250 were built, attracting the appreciation of the Porsche family and the grandson of the Sascha driver Alexander Kolowrat, who is also modelled.

“The development and the reaction made it a wonderful journey,” says Ramón.

Since that first Sascha, the Velasor team has created two more subjects – a 1914 Grand Prix Peugeot L45 and a Bugatti Brescia – as well as vintage board-track motorcycles.

The level of detail, including scaled-down engines and working suspension, together with figures of drivers and team personnel, is remarkable.

An initial idea is sketched and then designed in 3D, but for the final build Velasor uses authentic materials including brass, leather and wood.

Each model has more than 250 parts and requires serious concentration to build.

At Rétromobile last February Velasor previewed its next slot-car subject, a Mercedes-Benz S-type.

“I love the stories behind these great cars and Rudi Caracciola is another hero driver,” says Ramón.

“The first S-type will honour his 1927 victory in the debut race at the Nürburgring.

“I also like the idea that it’s another subject, like the Sascha, that has a link to Ferdinand Porsche.”
