Super-rare racers to go under the hammer at RM

| 29 May 2013

RM Auctions’ Irvine Laidlaw Competition Car Collection sale will put some of the world’s most sought-after racers up for auction in Battersea Park from 7-9 September.

One of the highlights is the ex-works and ex-Ecurie Ecosse 1955 long-nose Jaguar D-type that was driven by Duncan Hamilton, Paul Frère and Peter Sutcliffe among others.

The collection also includes two Maseratis: a 1958 250S and a 1960 Tipo 61.

An ex-Carroll Shelby and Jim Hall car, the former was the only 250S to originally be fitted with a 2.5-litre engine and, we’re told, is widely regarded as the best example in existence.

The Tipo 61, meanwhile, is an ex-Scuderia Camoradi machine that was co-driven by Masten Gregory and Gino Munaron in the epic 1960 1000km Nürburgring race.

The sale also boasts a stunning 1966 Ferrari 275GTB/C that came 10th in the ’66 Le Mans 24 Hours and took top spot at that year’s Mont Ventoux Hillclimb.

German exotica comes in the form of a Porsche 904/6 that contested the 1965 Le Mans 24 Hours with the works team and was driven to sixth position in the Nürburgring 1000km by Peter Nöcker and Günther Klass.

Completing the remarkable group of cars are a 1970 Chevron B16 that competed the Daytona 24 Hours and a ’71 Chevron B19 that took part in that year’s British Automobile Racing Club 1000km race.

Irvine Laidlaw, who has taken the difficult decision to give up racing, said: “I don’t regard myself as a collector. I am a car enthusiast and as an enthusiast I want to exercise my cars regularly, rather than gloat over them in the garage. So I have decided to sell the remaining competition cars and have consigned them to RM.”
