Trio of March single-seaters coming up for sale

A threesome of March racers from the extensive stable of Frank Sytner – and spanning the F1 pinnacle of motor sport to the battlefield of F3 – are to be auctioned next month.

All recently returned from the Grand prix de Monaco Historique, the cars will be sold by Silverstone Auctions on 21 July during the Silverstone Classic meeting.

Sure to generate the most interest if the 1972 Formula One March 721G. Fully restored and expected to raise £240,000 to £280,000, it was driven in period by Mike Beuttler among others and once out-qualified Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson.

The Formula 2 car is the March-BMW 782 (estimate £95-105,000) with original tub and fresh BMW engine. Famous names who have piloted it include Jean-Pierre Jarier, Jaques Lafitte and Harald Ertl.

Rounding off the trio is a completely rebuilt 1978 F3 March 783 that is predicted to sell for £45-55,000. In period it was run by Michael Korten, finishing runner up in the 1978 German Formula Three championship and overall winner in 1979.

Silverstone Auctions managing director Nick Whale said: "Each of these Frank Sytner [below] owned race cars are presented with their own fascinating and important backgrounds with illustrious racing pedigrees. To have just one, let alone all three cars for auction is a real coup.”
