The mammoth motor show at Essen this year celebrated the World Sportscar Championship.

Top-end cars paying tribute to the competition include a 1956 ‘long nose’ Jaguar D-Type and a 1959 Aston Martin DBR1.

Flying the Tricolore Italiano were are a 1953 Ferrari 250MM, which was raced on the Carrera Panamericana by Mexican Efrain Ruiz Echevarria, an ex-Mario Andretti 1970 512S and a 1975 Alfa Romeo T33TT.

A 1970 Rofgo-Collection Porsche 917 and a 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SLR did their bit for the Germans, while a 1973 Matra-Simca MS670 raced by Jean-Pierre Beltoise demonstrated French expertise.

Some of the world’s finest road cars equalled the race-bred competition with cars such as Ruote Borrani Milano’s 1953 Vignale Lancia Aurelia B52 coupé sitting easily with a flamboyant 1949 Delahaye 135 MS (standing for Modifie Speciale). Originally the Geneva show car, it featured an art-deco steering wheel and dashboard, plus a body by Ghia Aigle.

Meanwhile, Techno Classica’s stand gave visitors a sneak preview of 2013’s event with a 50th anniversary tribute to the Porsche 911 and a fabulous 1938 Talbot Lago 'Teardrop' by Figoni et Falaschi.

More than 340,000 visitors are expected to flock to 45th Essen Motor Show’s 12 halls from 1-9 December.
