Classic & Sports Car – Future classic: Morgan Supersport

Restomods appeal, but I’ve always felt some discomfort over plundering a perfectly good classic car to build one.

This successor to the Morgan Plus Six gets around that problem by offering the look and feel of a restomod, but on the basis of a brand-new car with the benefit of Malvern’s latest bonded-aluminium CXV platform.

Morgan reinventions have not always met with success – witness the failed Plus 4 Plus and controversial Aero 8 – but the Supersport blends the familiar shape with modern cues such as pod lights and a matt-black intake, plus a small boot in the redesigned tail.

The Morgan Supersport’s cabin is airy but tight

There are a few armchair critics, but it’s more successful in the metal than in photos, and on the road everyone appears to love it, without exception.

It’s already 10% stiffer than the Plus Six, and the optional carbon hardtop adds another 10%.

The huge rear ’screen is gawky, but it means the cabin is full of light and looks more spacious than it is, with limited elbow room.

It feels like a high-end powerboat inside, with rich hide, brushed aluminium and beautiful timber, plus borrowed switchgear that is integrated more effectively than in a traditional Morgan.

The Morgan Supersport’s interior is trimmed with premium materials that reflect its £100,000-plus price-tag

There are vast spec options for personalisation, while heated seats and Bluetooth give livability to contrast with the anachronistic sidescreens – but at least you can now take them with you.

On the move, you still get that ‘Cruella de Ville’ sensation from the long bonnet, yet this is a brilliant sports car that you can drive quickly without having to spend half an hour looking for lost fillings in the footwells later.

The ride is firm but supple, and while it still tracks fissures in the surface, it will tackle a bumpy B-road with new-found composure.

The 335bhp Morgan Supersport is rapid and the ride is pliant enough for longer trips

The chassis’ capability, combined with a driving position right over the rear axle, means you can feel everything going on beneath and have the confidence to exploit it, aided by light, fluid steering that’s full of feel.

If you pine for the character of 1960s ‘hairy-chested’ British sports cars, you’ll find it here – even if it comes courtesy of a German motor.

BMW’s B58 ‘six’ offers 335bhp and a muscular 369lb ft of torque at just 1520rpm, which in a car weighing sub-1200kg means scintillating pace.

Mated to an eight-speed automatic ’box, it goes from effortless to exciting with a flex of your right foot, lacking the scream of BMW straight-sixes of old, but still thrilling with an angry howl overlaid by whooshes and whistles.

The Morgan Supersport adds restomod flavour to Malvern’s flagship

A price-tag north of £100k leads to inevitable mutterings about the Porsche 911, yet the two aren’t really comparable.

You could use the Morgan every day, but I doubt many will.

A 911 won’t suffer the same creaks, leaks and wind noise, but nor will it offer a driving experience that is so totally involving and individual.
