Classic & Sports Car – Motoring art: Mark Davies

From Del Boy’s scruffy Reliant Regal van to a dazzling set of 007 Aston Martins, classic cars have featured regularly in Mark Davies’ surreal landscapes.

Combining his love of movies and storytelling, these richly detailed compositions are built up from thousands of digital images, layered to create the drama and atmosphere that absorb his many fans.

Art played a key role in Mark’s life from an early age. “I was quite a shy youngster, but painting gave me confidence,” he says.

“My parents were very encouraging and our home garage became my space. I was always carrying art back and forth to school.”

Mark’s art teacher, Mr Donald, was a crucial figure in developing his style, he tells us.

Piero della Francesca and the Surrealist Salvador Dalí were early influences, particularly the Spanish artist’s landscape compositions.

“I liked to paint, but I reacted against computers and lost confidence,” continues Mark. “Eventually I switched careers and became a bad manager, but I always wanted to get back into art.

“Thanks to my art teacher’s encouragement, I developed a flair for graphics and joined a design agency. One of the clients was Vauxhall, and that motivated me to develop my photo-retouching.”

Time went on, and as his skills progressed, Mark started producing prints.

“I have always had a vivid imagination and enjoyed creating a landscape from a story,” he says. And, as you can see from the works shown here, this plays out superbly in his detailed, varied pieces.

“My work features a broad range of subjects with a strong nostalgic theme.”

Favorite movies regularly inspire Mark’s packed, busy compositions, and automobiles are often part of the narrative.

“I’m always trying to shoehorn a classic car into my works,” he confesses to us.

De Lorean aside, how many Back to the Future references can you spot in this Mark Davies artwork, titled Outagas?

He continues: “The Back to the Future De Lorean is a regular subject.

“A collector in Worthing even invited me to take a ride in his replica, which was an amazing experience.

“It has been a popular theme in my prints, and for the 40th anniversary I’m working on another composition.”

Other common movie topics include Ghostbusters, with the 1959 Cadillac ‘Ectomobile’ a central focus.

Planned film-themed designs include the 1986 classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Mark is looking forward to featuring the (replica) Ferrari 250GT California.

Among recent commissions was one for the Porsche Centre Cambridge, in the UK, for which Mark produced a special print to launch its new showroom.

The design features 12 of Stuttgart’s finest, including Steve McQueen’s Porsche 356 Speedster and the Gulf 917 from Le Mans.

“I couldn’t resist changing the Hollywood sign to spell Porsche,” he tells us.

From his first car, a Vauxhall Nova SR, Mark has always enjoyed driving: “That was my pride and joy, but the insurance cost more than the car.

“I am lucky to now own my dream car, an Audi RS6.

“My mother is Belgian and I’m looking forward to taking her back there on a road trip.”

That could be a great adventure and as he is behind the wheel, taking in roadscapes and passing traffic, who knows what inspiration Mark might get for a future artwork.
