Very important model not only for Renault but for Europe, the 16 combined front-wheel drive with acres of room, and hatchback practicality. Very soft ride and seating, steering column change (better than feared), and lots of Gallic charm. Everything going for it except (to some eyes) the strange cabin styling, yet for practicality you forgave it everything. The engine was an all-new, light-alloy type, later used on many other Renaults. Automatic option introduced when the engine was up-gunned to 1565cc. 90mph no problem, with good refinement for the class. A much-appreciated car.
