The finest classic cars sold at auction this month

Your bumper guide to the classic marketplace

Late August and early September are always the busiest few weeks of the year for classic car auctions, and 2018 was no exception.

With RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co and Bonhams all holding massive sales during Monterey Car Week, records were always likely to tumble – and lo and behold, they did.

Chief among them was the sale of a Ferrari 250GTO for a world-record auction price of £36,787,800 with RM, but it was far from the only standout. That same auction also saw the Aston Martin DP215 Sports Prototype make a whopping £16,305,800, and a Ford GT40 go for £7,444,200; in all, RM made some £120m.

Not to be outdone, Gooding & Co had a record breaker of its own, with a Duesenberg SSJ becoming both the most expensive pre-war car ever to sell at auction, and the most valuable US car ever. The price? A hefty £16.7m.

Bonhams’ Quail Lodge sale didn't quite hit the same heights, but a ’53 Siata 208S did set a record when it sold for £1,257,800, while a beautiful Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 was a worthy sale-topper at £2,679,000.

Back in Blightly a few days later, Bonhams did it all over again – twice! – with sales at the Goodwood Revival and Beaulieu.

Here, British fare was understandably to the fore, although the top lot across the auctions was a British-American hybrid in the form of a Shelby Cobra 289 (£1,359,000). True homegrown successes included the 1990 Jaguar XJR-11 (£1,191,000), and a Rolls-Royce Phantom IV used by The Queen. You don’t get much more British than that.
