Dreaming of the open road?
With many of us still in lockdown due to the COVID-19 crisis, itching to have the freedom of the open road once more, at least we can prepare ourselves so we’re ready to make the most once restrictions are lifted.
This thought has led us to share some of the most eye-catching classic cars for sale this week, through reputable online vendors, to help you find your dream drive.
But you’ll need to be quick – they won’t be around long!
-
1. 1955 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 750B
When we said ‘head-turning’ we weren’t kidding, were we? And the same goes for our comment about needing to hurry – at the time of writing, bidding was due to close in just three days.
A matching-numbers example with a well-documented history, when new it went to Stockholm, imported by racer Jo Bonnier and his family, who ran the Alfa Romeo concessionaires in Sweden.
-
1955 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint 750B (cont.)
Restored inside and out over the past few years, it’s said to drive well – and, as you can see, it looks pretty special, too.
For sale with Collecting Cars, this desirable ‘pre-series’, Mille Miglia-eligible coupé, in fetching Verde Chiaro Metallizzato and with just over 45,000 miles under its wheels, is ready for its next adventure.
-
2. 1966 Ford Anglia 105E De Luxe
The online auction of this Anglia finishes at 8:30pm on Thursday 7 May, so if you fancy this little Ford, you can’t wait around.
Its US-inspired styling really pops with this bold, red and white finish, while inside there’s more of the same with its bright red interior and colour-matched steering wheel.
-
1966 Ford Anglia 105E De Luxe (cont.)
For sale with The Market and having had just six owners in its 54 years, this Anglia’s last keeper treated ‘Valerie’, as the car is known, to a nut-and-bolt restoration – and she has done around 10,000 miles since.
That’s why the car presents so well, then. And, at the time of writing, its reserve hadn’t been met, if you fancy bidding.
-
3. 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante
It probably goes without saying that this pick is far, far above most of our budgets, but it’s so devastatingly gorgeous we had to share it.
RM Sotheby’s ‘Price upon request’ says all it needs to for this Bugatti that was crowned Best of Show at the 1976 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and Best in Class at the same event 38 years later.
-
1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante (cont.)
The first of four built in this ‘low-headlight’ style, despite a few changes and embellishments applied during its life, this Type 57SC is now as it left the factory on 23 July 1937.
Most recently restored in 2013 and with a well-documented history throughout its life, if we could, we most definitely would…
-
4. 1970 MGB Roadster
Let’s come back down to earth with this charming-looking drop-top MGB being offered through The Market with a £9900 ‘buy it now’ price-tag.
For your near-£10k you get a car loved so much by a previous owner that he had it for around three decades – and apparently used it to woo his wife.
-
1970 MGB Roadster (cont.)
Restored in recent years, it is now finished in Midnight Blue, rather than the Trafalgar Blue in which it left the factory.
The vendor also says it has ‘a few performance improvement modifications’, too.
-
5. 1968 Fiat Dino Coupé 2000
This Fiat’s fantastic special-option colour of Mexico City Blue will certainly make it a head-turner – those Cromodora wheels look super, too.
And with a 2.0-litre, all-alloy V6 under the bonnet, it’s not short of the go to match the show, either.
-
1968 Fiat Dino Coupé 2000 (cont.)
It’s been in the UK since 2018, forming part of a well-kept collection, so use has been minimal, while the interior is described as being in ‘superb original condition’.
Giugiaro styling and a Ferrari-designed V6? It’s quite tempting… The auction ends this week.
-
6. 1985 Lancia Delta S4 Rally
Let’s stick with Italian classics for a little longer with this wow-factor offering – the car in which Markku Alén and Ilkka Kivimäki claimed second in the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally, no less.
The following year, with Fabrizio Tabaton and Luciano Tedeschini on board, it took its first win, on the Halkidiki Rally in Greece.
-
1985 Lancia Delta S4 Rally (cont.)
Few liveries are as evocative as this, and with serious and verified motorsport pedigree, chassis 207 would be a truly astonishing addition to anyone’s garage.
Being offered by RM Sotheby’s, if you have to ask the price you probably can’t afford it, but in these strange times, even the fact that it’s for sale perked us up!
-
7. 1979 De Tomaso Pantera GTS ‘Narrow Body’
We’re quite happy in la-la land, so let’s remain there a little longer with this rare version of the Tom Tjaarda-penned Pantera.
It’s quite a find, too, said to be in “as good as untouched original condition with no alterations from factory specification”, probably in part due to the fact that it was with the same family from new until 2014.
-
1979 De Tomaso Pantera GTS ‘Narrow Body’ (cont.)
Listed with Bonhams and coming to market with all its documentation from new, this much-loved and always-cosseted example won’t be cheap.
But with those dramatic looks and that thundering V8, it’d be worth it, right?
-
8. 1963 Mercedes-Benz 220Sb
If your classic has to be practical, too, how about this Fintail Mercedes?
And with 89,000 miles showing on its odometer, it is more than ready for its next adventure – after all, these Benzes were built to last.
-
1963 Mercedes-Benz 220Sb (cont.)
This is an original right-hand-drive car assembled at the Port Melbourne factory of Australian Motor Industries Ltd, one of fewer than 1000 220Sbs with automatic gearboxes built there.
It’s also spent time as a museum piece and came to the UK early last year.
At the timing of writing, there were six days left of bidding on Collecting Cars.
-
9. 1973 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40
This ex-military FJ takes the term ‘practical classic’ to the next level.
And, like the previous car, it’s not been in the UK long, having spent much of its life in a private collection in Kuala Lumpur.
-
1973 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 (cont.)
It’s said to be rust free, plus it has benefited from a recent service, and the fitting of newly upholstered seats and floor covering.
What’s more, it’s being offered without reserve – you have until 7:30pm on 11 May to bid.
-
10. 1987 Porsche 928 S4
However you'd better get your skates on if this takes your fancy – as we write there are just a few days left on the auction.
This sub-52,000-mile 928 in Moss Green Metallic with a Mahogany leather interior has been cherished throughout its life, and spent its first 30 years with the same owner.
-
1987 Porsche 928 S4 (cont.)
Amazingly, its paint colour was chosen because as well as this 928, its first owner also had a 964, a 911 Carrera 3.2 and a 3.3-litre turbo in that same shade – a serious fan, then.
Powered by a 5.0-litre V8 mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, this Porsche needs another proper enthusiast to take it on.
-
11. 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible
You’ll have noticed we’re back in the realm of cars we’d love to afford but probably never will, but then this Aston Martin, one of seven factory-original DB5 Vantage convertibles, is such a delicious prospect.
Peony Red with a tan Connolly leather-trimmed cabin, it is a beautiful combination for this concours-award-winning classic.
-
1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage Convertible (cont.)
It started life in the UK and was ordered with two unusual options: a two-inch clutch-pedal extension and extra padding for the front-seat squabs. Perhaps its first owner wasn’t too tall…
After two further British custodians it departed for the US, most recently featuring as part of a collection on the West Coast.
Surely there are few more perfect classic drop-tops than this for the sun-kissed summer of driving we’re all craving? Its next owner will be very lucky indeed.
