Rare-specification Cobra leads million-dollar sale

| 12 Aug 2013

A 1964 Shelby Cobra that sold for $825,000 topped Auctions America’s California Collector Car Auction from 1-3 August.

The Cobra came equipped from the factory with an automatic transmission and had been subject to a first-rate restoration.

The 289 was just one of around 400 cars up for grabs at the event, which generated more than $17.2 million.

Second-place sale went to a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster that made $808,500 and had once belonged to actor Robert Stack.

The top-five lots were rounded off by a 1952 Cunningham C3 Coupe ($407,000), a 1971 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona ($401,500) and a 1974 Ferrari 246GTS Dino ($291,500).

Another highlight was an ex-Steve McQueen 1946 Indian Chief motorcycle that made $143,750.

Auctions America’s next sale will be held at Auburn Park from 29 August-2 September.
