Any Mercedes-Benz 500E is pretty special, but add a celebrity owner into the mix and what you’ve got is a sleeper supersaloon with serious pulling power.
And that’s what we have here, because this Mercedes was owned by Rowan Atkinson – not once, but twice!
The actor and comedian is well-known as a serious car enthusiast and this Merc is a fine example of his good taste.
And now it could be yours – because it’s up for grabs at Classic Car Auctions’ sale next month and is being offered with no reserve.
One of only 29 examples of this 322bhp four-door supplied to the UK in left-hand drive, it was purchased new by Atkinson in 1991 and the Blackadder and Bean star enjoyed it for four years.
Its second owner kept it for 23 years before Atkinson bought it back – and now he’s consigning it to CCA’s auction.
As you might expect from a W124 Mercedes, it’s covered 193,000 miles but is still going strong, and it’ll be sold with an extensive history file and an MoT until 2020.
And, as if the Atkinson connection wasn’t enough, it’s also something of a celebrity in its own right, having featured in Car magazine regularly over the years.
So, what will the 500E’s next owner be getting? A joint project between Swabian powerhouses Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, that’s what.
That sober, silver bodywork sits 23mm lower than standard and has subtly flared arches and16in alloys. Beneath it lies a five-litre V8 which can propel it from 0-62mph in 6.1 secs en route to an electronically limited 155mph top speed, while carrying you and four passengers in serene comfort.
It’s a compelling recipe: a stealthy performer that’s also a bona-fide classic. Admit it, you want it…
The CCA sale will take place on Saturday 25 May at The Warwickshire Event Centre near Leamington Spa. You can view the full lot list here.
