Your classic: Jaguar E-type S1 3.8

Classic & Sports Car – Your classic: Jaguar E-type S1 3.8

It all started 30 years earlier, when I was an apprentice plumber. My cousin’s husband, Eddie, asked me to install a gas cooker for them.

As I stood waiting outside on a cold winter evening, wondering what the job would entail, Eddie, who was a bit flash, arrived in his latest car: a 4.2-litre 1968 Jaguar E-type 2+2 in Old English White.

Like most normal teenagers, I appreciated cars but was far from being a ‘car nut’.

I admired Jaguar E-types even though I had never been in one, but the drive with Eddie on that dismal, wintry night through Lincolnshire transformed my view of what a car should be.

First, there was the A18, the main road from Grimsby to Doncaster, then the B1207 from Castlethorpe to Winterton.

Long straights were interspersed by varying degrees of bends, all of which simply passed in a dreamlike blur.

I sat there, cosseted in the warm leather, watching the illuminated countryside fly by, thinking that this had to be the most beautiful, sexy, awesome car I had ever seen – and one day I had to own one.

Fast-forward 30 years, and while other things had taken priority, the dream was burning as bright as ever.

This enthusiast’s Jaguar E-type dream began when he was a teenager

I had been subscribing to Classic & Sports Car for some years, so I had read about the common Jaguar E-type pitfalls and faults that could be encountered, and knew that I would need a professional inspection.

I had read so many stories about people buying what they thought was an honest E-type and finding it was something else.

Over the ensuing months it was disheartening to travel hundreds of miles to view cars described as ‘very good’, ‘exceptional’ or ‘near concours’, only to discover that they were average at best.

Then, in January 2004, I went to view a 3.8 fhc in Carmen Red, with the registration CPF 555B.

It was advertised in Classic & Sports Car as a potential concours-winner: it had scooped Best Newcomer at the Benson & Hedges Concours in 1989 and Best 3.8 at Beaulieu in 1991.

It was then sold to a private collector and covered just 97 miles in 12 years. The car was stored in a barn in Bedfordshire. There wasn’t any lighting so I could only view it with a torch.

It couldn’t be driven, but it fired at about the seventh attempt and settled to its glorious, burbling, soft growl in a couple of minutes.

The interior was like new, as was the underside, although there were some things that needed attention. Nonetheless, I knew that this was the best example I had viewed to date.

After having a professional inspection, I bought the car, which I have now owned for more than 20 years. Every time I drive it, I think to myself: “I really must do this more often.”

I wanted an authentic Jaguar E-type with no so-called ‘upgrades’, so I could enjoy the original driving experience.

CPF 555B is still in superb, original condition down to the single-bladed cooling fan, dynamo, Kelsey-Hayes vacuum servo and Moss gearbox.

This Jaguar E-type S1 is unmodified and highly original

It has been serviced by a Jaguar specialist in Swansea and MoT’d there for the past 20 years.

There is not one part of this car that doesn’t work, including the clock (which is rare). Everything has been done to original specification.

I have driven it through Europe and to the north of England, and it has never let me down.

In my time I have covered some 22,000 miles with it, and the odometer now reads nearly 36,000. My dream really did come true.
