A Shelby Daytona Coupe has been crowned Best of Show at The Quail, A Motorsport Gathering. The 1964 example belongs to the Miller family and was entered in the Peter Brock Designs class – and the man himself was at Quail to accept the award.
Other winners at the 16 August event included John McCaw's exquisite 1953 Aston Martin DB3S in a category celebrating the marque's centenary, plus the Testa Rossa of Chris and Ann Cox in the Great Ferraris class. Jaguar legend Norman Dewis was on hand to present the award to the winner of the Post-War Racing Car group - Jeff Lotman's XK120, in which Dewis set a record speed of 172.412mph at Jabbeke in 1953.
The exclusive event took place in the picturesque surroundings of Monterey's Quail Lodge, and attracted a select but varied entry. The central Aston Martin display (above) included a range of cars from the Mallya Collection's 1928 T-type to Sammy Hagar's Vanquish S. It was somewhat overshadowed, however, by the Post-War Racing line-up.
The outrageous Group 44 Triumph TR8 (above) that Bob Tullius told C&SC was his favourite racing car was displayed with Thomas Shaughnessy's Ford GT40 MkIV and two IMSA racers from Toyota USA: a 1987 Celica Turbo and a 1992 Eagle MkIII prototype. Nearby was the Porsche 911 RSR that Emerson Fittipaldi put on pole position for the first IROC event in 1974.
