Classic & Sports Car – Remembering a special Alfa Romeo 8C-2900B

Having chanced upon a 2005 photo of a Pinin Farina-bodied 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C-2900B at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, I was so struck by this gorgeous machine that I had to know more, and see more.

Sadly, it is seen rarely in public: other recent appearances have been limited to another showing at Pebble, in 2021, and the 2023 Greenwich Concours d’Elegance (where it took Best in Show).

Fortunately, there were four big hits for chassis 412012 in the Classic & Sports Car back catalogue, now easily searchable via our online archive.

Mick Walsh toured Scotland in this Alfa Romeo 8C-2900B for our August ’94 issue

In our July 1992 magazine’s Past and Present section, Jon Pressnell reported that this one-time Mille Miglia racer (it claimed third, in 1938) previously owned by Cisitalia creator Piero Dusio was thought lost for decades, but it was discovered by ‘Two-Nine’ guru Simon Moore, having journeyed through Switzerland and Germany, then, in 1959, to the USA.

It was still remarkably original when Terry Cohn bought it in 1992, reinstated its correct engine and commissioned a restoration by Tony Merrick.

In the August 1994 edition of Classic & Sports Car, Mick Walsh was lucky to take a thrilling drive of 412012 through Scotland’s Galloway Forest Park.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he enthused about its refined ride and impressive racing history: ‘Nothing could match the pace of Pintacuda in ’37 or Biondetti in ’38 on the epic Italian road race. Charging up the 70-plus hairpins of the Stelvio Pass, this very chassis, with its earlier botticella (barrel) cycle-winged body, trounced all, including the factory team of Two-Nines.’

I took time to enjoy the accompanying photos shot during this 600-mile drive which, as you might expect, failed to dampen my enthusiasm for this stunning Alfa Romeo.

John Surtees recorded a 32.564-sec lap time round Curborough in this Alfa for our August 1998 magazine

Then, as if my prayers being answered wasn’t enough, four years later, in our August 1998 issue, none other than John Surtees threw it around Curborough Sprint Circuit.

“I can sense that the Alfa would feel competent on the road, but on the track it wants to oversteer at the slightest sight of a corner,” he told us.

But that incredible feature deserves its own tribute another day.
