A star-studded debate provided a fascinating sideshow at this year's Grand Prix de Monaco Historique.
Following the success of a pilot at Goodwood last year, Credit Suisse held its first Historic Racing Forum in front of a capacity crowd.
And it was a belter with C&SC's Alain de Cadenet and Simon Taylor joining Jochen Mass, Emanuele Pirro and Duncan Dayton to discuss the thorny issue of whether historic racing is better than F1.
Media, VIPs and Monaco entrants were enthralled by the one-hour session that was deemed such a success that Credit Suisse has promised repeat performances at other events.
For those that could not attend, Credit Suisse has usefully taken some notes, so here is what the stars had to say:
On how F1 used to be...
Jochen Mass: "No F1 car was ever the same in how it behaved from the start of the race to the end. The demands on the drivers now are technically entirely different from how it was back then [the 1970s]. Today, coping with tyre degradation has become a major part of how a modern day F1 driver wins a race. Back then, everything was changing from one lap to the next. There has been a shift in F1's culture – a shift from being primarily about the very best drivers, to now also being about the very best designers and engineers."
