Joy Rainey will set off tomorrow on a 2826-mile journey from Los Angeles to Daytona Beach, Florida, in aid of Cancer Research UK at the wheel of her 110-year-old Oldsmobile.
Rainey, who is a regular participant on the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, decided to tackle the route in tribute to her late husband and former co-driver, Trevor Hulks, who succumbed to prostate cancer.
Rainey said: “Trevor had always wanted to go to America so, after I bought the car in 2006, I found out it was the third vehicle to successfully cross the United States from San Francisco to New York in 1903.
“Trevor’s cancer spread very quickly through his body so I felt passionately about raising funds for research into metastasis.”
A seasoned racer, Rainey has campaigned everything from a Morris Minor (see C&SC, July ’04) to a Jaguar E-type and hopes to raise £20,000 on her latest adventure.
Rainey is scheduled to arrive at Daytona Beach on 13 May: you can follow her progress via her Facebook page Joy Across America and on Twitter (@joyacrossameric).
