Lotus Elan takes on Detroit iron in Assen

The Dutch NK HTGT pre-’66 championship brought cut and thrust racing to the Assen TT motorcycle circuit during its annual visit to The Gamma Racing Day Free Motorsports Festival on 6-7 August.

The first day’s racing was lead by Jos Stevens and his Lotus Elan, who managed to hold off a determined charge from the big Fords of Nobert Gross and Martin Bijleveld, the latter being overtaken by Robert Hamilton in a very quick Marcos 1800. Small Touring Car class honours went to Rene de Vries and his Mini Cooper.

Michiel Campagne was in imperious form during Sunday’s race, steering his 650bhp Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport to the head of the race despite starting from the back of the grid and having to pass the entire field. The final car to succumb was the Lotus of Jos Stevens, who was eventually passed by his son Bob Stevens – also in a Lotus Elan. It didn’t last, however, with the younger Stevens spinning at the last corner and dropping down to fourth.
