One of about 40 surviving Ligier JS2s will be at this year’s Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace from 5-7 September.

Created by former racing driver and Formula One team owner Guy Ligier (1930-2015), the JS2 was designed to take on the best sports cars from Italy and elsewhere in the 1970s.

This summer, a black-and-red example will compete against 60 of the world’s finest classic cars for the Concours of Elegance Best in Show trophy.

The Ligier name is well known in F1 circles, but the French firm was also a sports-car maker in the 1970s

Ligier, who was also a successful businessman, rower, rugby player and motorcycle racer, made his F1 debut in 1966, behind the wheel of a Cooper-Maserati.

Although he later returned to F1 as a team boss, the death of his friend Jo Schlesser at the 1968 French Grand Prix put him off competing in single-seaters.

Instead, in the late 1960s, Ligier switched to building and campaigning sports cars.

He hired engineer Michel Tetu to create the Ligier JS1 racing car – the model’s name was a tribute to the late Schlesser.

The Pietro Frua-designed two-door had to be homologated to compete in GT categories, so the JS2 was created as a roadgoing version.

Reportedly, fewer than 100 Ligier JS2s were built, and the car heading to Concours of Elegance this September is believed to be one of only 40 or so left.

It is powered by the same 3-litre V6 engine found in the Citroën SM (an earlier deal with Ford to supply Essex V6s fell through) and wrapped in glassfibre bodywork.

The Ligier JS2 that will be displayed at Hampton Court Palace is more special than most, though.

It was once owned by Michel Tetu, the lead engineer on the JS2 project.

What’s more, the Frenchman restored the car himself.

It was later bought by Jacques Nicolet, a racing driver and businessman who bought Guy Ligier’s eponymous company in the 2000s.

“Our Selection Committee loved the story of not only the Ligier company but also of this particular example, lovingly kept in perfect condition as a testament to the vision of its namesake,” said James Brooks-Ward, Concours of Elegance CEO.

Concours of Elegance returns to Hampton Court Palace from 5-7 September 2025. The Ligier JS2 will join more than 500 other classic cars on display across the weekend.
