Future classic: Audi S8

Classic & Sports Car – Future classic: Audi S8

As the battle for outside-lane domination reached new heights in the early ’90s, Audi’s S8 disrupted the hierarchy of the large-engined Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series even more than the A8 had done in the diplomats’ car pool.

In search of limousine supremacy, the S8 – as immortalised in Ronin – took a different tack: a short-wheelbase, more sporting type of ultimate luxury saloon.

A showcase of its magnificent 4.2-litre V8 and quattro four-wheel drive, this bruiser in a sharp suit distilled Audi’s performance identity for decades to come.

The latest Audi S8 – packed with touchscreens and digital displays – is worlds away from the 1990s original

It’s sad to admit that those days will soon be behind us, eclipsed by the sober efficiencies of electrified drivetrains and new tastes for technology-laden SUVs; now, most limousines have become hybrid-electric airport shuttles and luxury Ubers.

Little surprise that this fourth-generation S8 will be the last.

What a shame that is, because its blend of driver appeal, conservative style and impeccable refinement have been developed with the quiet perfection of a corporate superstar enjoying the peak of their career.

The Audi S8 has a plush rear compartment, but it’s best enjoyed from the driver’s seat

There are modern solutions for old tricks, such as the stereo-amplified V8 for gratuitous woofles around town, and active suspension that scans the road and lifts the wheels over speed bumps.

Yet while the Audi’s full suite of technology does impress, the old-school charms are what really make this car.

The low driving position is spot-on and the interior is beautifully finished, with a self-assured design simplicity: that everything feels expensive, particularly the switchgear, is enough.

The Audi S8’s big brakes make sure stopping power is just as brutal as its 3.8-sec 0-60mph time

The high-torque starter spins the V8 into a low, sluicing rumble – instantly elevated above the uncouth petrol generators of hybrid rivals, while far from the gauche theatrics of a bechromed V8 Mercedes-AMG.

It takes on a cultured howl when extended, staying just above an eerily low rustle of wind noise.

As an extravagantly effective machine for the autobahn, it is as superb as any S8, but the real genius is how enjoyable it is to drive.

Turn-in is remarkably positive and the helm responsive, as it deploys four-wheel-steering and anti-roll systems to pivot towards an apex in an attitude more appropriate to a car half its size.

The Audi S8, Ingolstadt’s ultimate executive express

The trick rear diff finishes turning this 2230kg executive express into a real precision instrument.

And yet, as talented as it is, this S8 finale is perhaps the most discreet of all.

Marked only by brief flashes of red badging, its juxtaposition of sensational driving dynamics beneath neatly tailored coachwork is the perfection of the 1990s Audi Sport formula.

Its retirement was inevitable, as new ideas replace old, but this one leaves on a particularly high note.
