New races and old favourites set for Donington Historic

The full line-up has been announced for the Donington Historic Festival – and this year there’s a new kid on the block.

The Sportscar 2000 grid is an entirely new international historic race series for 1961-71 two-litre cars, designed to showcase smaller-engined but highly exciting racers such as Porsche 904 and 906, Chevron B8, Lotus 23B, Abarth and Alfa Romeo TZ.

The Nuvolari and Ascari Trophy for pre-1961 Front Engined GP cars is another addition to the Donington roster, and this one harks back to the circuit’s earliest days: it will see some of the first true racers, from 1925 to 1961, going head to head.

A third race making its DHF debut is the HRDC ‘Allstars’ grid for pre-66 sports, GT and Touring Cars: think TVR Griffith vs Bill Thomas Cheetah, Austin-Healey Jamaican and Daimler 250SP ‘Dart’.

Of course plenty of old favourites will return to the event too. The U2TC race was absent last year but is back for 2019, and will see Ford Lotus Cortinas taking on BMW 1800 TISAs and Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTAs, while later touring cars will compete in the Historic Touring Car Challenge with Tony Dron Trophy for pre-1991 British and European Touring Cars.

The Royal Automobile Club Woodcote Trophy, meanwhile, is always a highlight thanks to the glamour of the pre-’56 sports cars that contest it – we're talking C- and D-type Jaguars and 250S Maseratis, for instance. There’ll be more big cats out in force in the Jaguar Classic Challenge, and you can also expect to see a few in the Stirling Moss Trophy.

In all, a total of 15 grids will compete in 18 races over the event’s three days, with qualifying on the Friday (3 May) and the races proper split between the Saturday and Sunday (4 and 5 May).
