The McLaren F1 went into production in 1993

New Zealander Bruce McLaren started his own firm building racing cars in 1963, namely the mid-engined M1A.

McLaren was killed in a crash at Goodwood Motor Circuit in 1970, but his name lived on through the team he created.

With Teddy Mayer at the helm, McLaren won its first Formula One constructors’ championship in 1974.

The three-seat McLaren F1 puts the driver in the middle

By 1993, the British outfit had six more F1 titles under its belt, but it also started to make a name for itself away from the circuit.

Aside from the short-lived M6GT, the firm had little experience making road cars.

That didn’t seem to matter, though, because the 200mph-plus, three-seat McLaren F1 was a genuine threat to the established supercar makers.

It impressed on track, too: a McLaren F1 GTR won the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, driven by JJ Lehto, Masanori Sekiya and Yannick Dalmas.

Bruce McLaren founded his eponymous company in 1963

Despite the F1’s success, it took more than a decade for another McLaren-badged road car to appear, and this was via Mercedes-Benz with the front-engined SLR McLaren.

Then, in 2010, McLaren returned to the mid-engined formula for its MP4-12C supercar, and it has stuck to this recipe since, with the P1 hypercar, track-focused Senna and more.

Now, 61 years after Bruce McLaren founded his company, road cars bearing his name will come together at London Concours 2024 on Tuesday 4 June.

“We are thrilled with this spectacular addition to London Concours 2024, as we welcome 50 McLaren supercars on the opening day,” said Andrew Evans, director of London Concours.

“This showcase not only enhances the experience of our summer garden party but also provides attendees with a unique opportunity to witness the evolution of McLaren’s most iconic models.”
