Isleros and Espadas thrill on half-century tour

Classic & Sports Car – Half century tour for Islero and Espada

When Lamborghini has an anniversary to celebrate, it does so in serious style.

As the Espada and Islero are both 50 this year, Lamborghini Polo Storico – the marque’s in-house restoration and certification arm – organised a near-800km (500-mile) tour.

Starting in Perugia on 7 September, 20 Isleros and Espadas followed a picturesque route across the Italian countryside, taking in the Umbria, Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions.

Two of the cars – an Espada Series 3 (chassis 9090 of 1976) finished in Blu Notte and an Islero (chassis 6330 of 1968) in Rosso Amaranto – were from Lamborghini’s museum, while the remaining participants were owned by enthusiasts.

And, come the end of the tour, some of these privately owned Lambos were deemed worthy of special mention by the firm’s Chairman and CEO, Stefano Domenicali.

Among them, a 1973 Espada Series 3, chassis 9300, received an award for the car owned the longest by a single keeper. Bought in January 1977 by two English owners, it was the family’s daily driver, ferrying kids to school and used on the commute.

It’s now part of the family and was been restored and registered for the tour to mark its owners’ golden wedding anniversary.

Another British Lambo was also singled out for recognition, this time for being ‘most faithful’ to Sant’Agata Bolognese.

This was a 1968 Islero S, chassis 6435, that belongs to an English collector; it was bought new by his family in 1969 and then passed down to him in 1993.

It’s one of just 70 Islero S models built – and one of the very few right-hand-drive examples – and every year, the car is driven from the UK to Sant’Agata Bolognese for servicing.

There was also a prize for the car driven the furthest to the event: the winner made the trip from Oslo, a grand total of 6000km (around 3700 miles).

The car? A super-rare Espada Series 2, chassis 8386, one of just 12 produced in VIP spec.
