Bristol Cars has announced its return with a limited run of five ‘new-era’ Fighters.

The first has been unveiled at this week’s Salon Privé, held at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire from 2-6 September.

This also marks 80 years since the Car Division of the Bristol Aeroplane Company completed its first model, the 400.

The original Bristol Fighter was powered by the 7990cc, all-alloy Chrysler V10 developed for the 1992 Dodge Viper, and it was created by a team led by then-chairman Toby Silverton.

This 200mph-plus supercar wasn’t the comeback its maker hoped it would be: numbers are vague, but no more than 14 were built between 2004 and 2011, when the marque entered administration.

But 15 years later, the firm’s new owner, Paul King, and chairman Richard Hackett – a former Bristol employee and co-owner of classic car dealer SLJ Hackett, a marque specialist – are set to revive the 525bhp Fighter. And it will keep the all-alloy V10.

The newly announced cars aren’t restomods; they will echo the original model’s specification, using leftover chassis and other components saved from the company’s liquidation in 2020, nine years after entering administration.

The ‘new’ Fighters will be constructed in partnership with an as-yet-unnamed, low-volume British manufacturer.

The people behind Bristol’s rebirth have also hinted that all-new models are on the horizon.

“To bring Bristol back to making cars in Britain, and with Richard Hackett returning to the company, we have brought together an exceptional combination of heritage, knowledge, engineering and craftsmanship,” says King. “This is the beginning of Bristol’s return, and there is much more to come.”

The car revealed at Salon Privé this week has black paintwork, a tan-leather cabin and a six-speed manual gearbox.

The original Fighter cost £229,125 in 2006, but Bristol has not revealed the price-tag of the four remaining examples.

Owners will be able to personalise their cars, which will be available in left- or right-hand drive and with a package of upgrades that can boost power to 600bhp.
