As a young car enthusiast with a talent for drawing, Ilya Avakov could never have imagined his art would later be exhibited around the world, including London and Miami.

But his artistic relaxation, inspired by beautiful car design, has been showcased often outside his Russian homeland and led to some fascinating commissions that include a Volga fan in Italy.

Growing up in Murmansk and later moving south to Pyatigorsk within a very artistic family, Ilya was encouraged to draw from an early age.

He says: “My father is a painter and industrial designer, my mother is a sculptor. Both went to the St Petersburg State Art and Industrial Academy, where I later studied industrial design.”

Ilya completed his studies in transportation design and has since worked in a wide variety of jobs in the industry, including designing combine harvesters at Rostselmash and toys for manufacturer Magneticus.

“As I started to learn more about vehicles, so my painting became bolder – particularly when I began working on canvas,” Ilya explains.

“Painting is a meditative process and a way to forget everything in the world, particularly after a long day at work.”

Ilya’s dramatic paintings begin with digital sketches in Photoshop.

“I work in all media,” he explains. “My favourite is oils over a big canvas, but when I have a deadline for a magazine illustration or an event poster, acrylic is more practical because it dries faster.

“My hero is Camilo Pardo, who was chief designer on the Ford GT and an inspirational artist.

“I was lucky enough to meet him when I exhibited with the Automotive Fine Arts Society at the Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance in 2020. I also love Dexter Brown’s work.”

Ilya still treasures his first car, a 2002 Mazda 323F, which is ideal for the local Caucasus mountain roads, but he would love to own something more classic.

“I am fascinated by all cars, but a GAZ Volga M21 is on my dream list,” he says.

“During the height of the pandemic, I was commissioned by an Italian car collector to create an illustration of his prized Volga.

“He’d fallen in love with the M21 after spotting one buried in snow on a trip to Moldova.”

Motorsport subjects often feature in Ilya Avakov’s work, here the Brabham BT45 driven by Carlos Pace

“He went to amazing lengths to buy one and trailered it back to Lake Como, which took eight days with many customs problems,” he continues.

“I admired his passion for this rare Russian classic and felt honoured to draw the only Volga in Italy.

“Another favourite car is the Bentley Continental, which has impressive proportions.

“Be it an Alfa Romeo GTV or a Lamborghini Countach, automotive beauty is a constant source of motivation for me.”

“There’s a strong classic car scene in Russia with some big shows,” he adds, “including the Oldtimer-Gallery events in St Petersburg and Moscow, which are good for reference. We also have a historic racing championship.”

Ilya has travelled across Europe in search of further inspiration, including Italy and Germany.

He adds: “Rupert Whyte of Historic Car Art has been very encouraging.

“My work has been exhibited in the Martini Racing 50th-anniversary display and the Royal Automobile Club’s Art of Motoring.”
