The 1926 Rolls-Royce Phantom I, known as The Phantom of Love (left); one-off 1951 Bentley MkVI Cresta II Facel Métallon

Two British cars are in the running for the accolade, including the unique Rolls-Royce Phantom I that triumphed at September’s Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court Palace.

Known as The Phantom of Love, the 1926 car was commissioned by Clarence Gasque, the UK financial director for Woolworth shops, as a gift for his wife, Maude, an heiress to the retail company. It’s fitted with a Rococo-style interior, including tapestries from Aubusson in France.

The other British entry, a 1951 Bentley MkVI Cresta II Facel Métallon that was voted Best of Show at the Cartier Style et Luxe at Goodwood Festival of Speed, has a similar story.

The one-off coupé was commissioned by Facel Vega founder Jean Daninos in 1951 for his wife.

Two 1930s Alfa Romeos are contenders for The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award 2025, the 1934 P3 that took the Best of Show crown at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May and the 1938 8C-2900B that won at March’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance

The latter was the only 2900 bodied by Stabilimenti Farina and a prototype for the Mille Miglia car.

The Alfas are joined by two compatriots from Maranello: the Ghia-bodied 1954 Ferrari 375MM and that was awarded the top prize at 2025’s Palm Beach Cavallino Classic in Florida, USA, and The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering’s most-recent winner, a 1996 F50 GT.
