Classic & Sports Car – The specialist: The Den

The Peugeot 106 GTI is at The Den for its second visit, having come over from Ireland for further refurbishment.

“The owner bought this from his late uncle, who had it from new,” says managing director Nick Boaz. “He has a massive sentimental attachment.”

This example was a good car to start with, but The Den has drilled down on the details and sourced replacement window trim, refurbished the cam cover and replaced corroded fixings in the engine bay.

This no-job-too-small approach is what the Leicestershire workshop was founded for.

This Peugeot 106 GTI (closest) has been in the same family since it was new; it was a sound car, but The Den is making it one of the best

Owners of coachbuilt V12 Ferraris or a costly classic Mercedes-Benz are well used to swish specialists that provide the customer service you would expect from a luxury hotel rather than a mechanic, but most of us are accustomed to knowledgeable workshops that can lack 21st-century communication.

The idea behind The Den, now two years old, is to be a one-stop car-care shop for the 106 GTIs, Toyota Land Cruisers and E39 5 Series BMWs of this world: a prestige service for the modern classics now lying at the very heart of the hobby.

The Den is an offshoot of Retropower, in Hinckley, Lincolnshire, which has been putting together bespoke restomods across the past 15 years, including a recent Ford Escort Twin Cam built for no less than Gordon Murray.

Finding themselves turning down work that wasn’t five-figure engine-swap projects, but also needing a business to recommend for the upkeep of its finished cars, Retropower founders Nathaniel and Callum and Seviour set up The Den alongside Nick, who had cut his teeth as a Mercedes-Benz technician, and was later an engineer at both Red Bull Racing and Tolman Motorsport.

A service at The Den starts with an extensive inspection. Nick is candid that this loses customers who want a quick oil change or a new wheel bearing: the inspection is £1254 before any work has been done.

“Someone could come in telling you a car isn’t starting properly,” says Nick. “You could fix that for £1000, then the mechanic tells the customer, ‘It’s really rusty by the way.’ We’re trying to create long-term relationships. It’s important customers know the car is worth spending money on.”

The multi-page inspection document is not just a traffic-light system, says Nick: “It’s much more in-depth and dependent on how the customer wants to use the car.”

Some people ask The Den to do everything Nick picks out, which includes mechanical repairs as well as the sourcing of trim pieces, fixing rattles and organising third-party services.

“Everything we do is at the client’s pace,” says Nick. Some customers will set a monthly budget to go through the issues; others will mark out jobs they want to tackle themselves.

Elsewhere in the workshop is a Daihatsu Charade GTti, again with a family ownership story and in for an engine rebuild.

A BMW E39 M5 and MG Metro are nearby, but there are some traditional, chrome-bumpered classic cars here as well.

A 40-series Toyota Land Cruiser powered by a Lexus V8 is awaiting collection, while a Jaguar Mk2 3.4 is being prepared for conversion to electronic fuel injection as part of a subtle restomod job.

Nick says: “We’re doing that here rather than at Retropower because there is no bodywork going on. We are just making it reliable and easier to use.”

The main focus is on modern classics and modernising, therefore, but The Den will tackle anything post-war, within reason.

“Our only real criterion is customers who love their cars,” considers Nick. “We don’t cater to a particular demographic, or a ‘scene’, or a make or marque. It’s people who just really love cars and are passionate, and who want the best for them.”
